The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) met June 21 to June 28, 2008, in San Jose, California. General Assembly meets every two years. Overtures

"Overtures are items of business that have been approved by a presbytery or a synod and shall request the General Assembly to take a particular action, or approve or endorse a particular statement or resolution. (See Book of Order, G-11.0103t(3).)"—Office of the General Assembly: Standing Rules

Many of the items of business that were considered at the General Assembly came to the Assembly through the overture process. Because of the structure that is used in the preparation of overtures, you can usually identify them in the business agenda by the use of the word "On" in the title.

Reading a GA Business Item Listing

For each listing, you will notice that the title begins with a number. The digit(s) before the hyphen indicate the committee to which this business has been assigned for initial review at General Assembly. Following the hyphen, the rest of the number is this item's unique identification. Committees do not always consider their business in numerical order; each committee's Proposed Agenda will be published later on PC-Biz and is always subject to change since business items may take more or less time than budgeted for them.

Following the title will be the name of the sponsor who brings this business to the General Assembly, the full name of the assigned committee, and a type listing—how this item will be considered, whether by the full General Assembly or another agency. Finally, the unique link that can be used to track this item is listed.

An item sponsored by the Synod is listed first, followed by items that are sponsored by the presbyteries of this Synod.

The Synod of Southern California and Hawaii is grounded in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the abundant love of God, and the power and freedom of the Holy Spirit. As the body of Christ, the Synod is a visible sign of a rich diversity of persons, gifts, and understandings.
We are becoming a flexible community as the Body of Christ for creative interplay among governing bodies.
This is a new day for mutual up-building, and for actively forming relationships grounded in Christ that enable congregations, presbyteries and the synod to serve most effectively the emerging mission in their contexts, consistent with the constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
