The Presbytery of Santa Barbara celebrated the groundbreaking for the new buildings for its student ministry center at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on May 16. The new facilities will offer modern living and gathering space for 45 students in a Christian environment. Construction and financing plans had been nearly finalized in late 2008 when the effects of the economic downturn were being felt by the banks. The Presbytery’s bank was not willing to give final approval for the construction loan unless the Presbytery could put up additional collateral. After an in-depth presentation by the Presbytery as well as their banker and consultants, the Synod Council voted to pledge Synod funds as collateral to supplement funds already pledged by the Presbytery and local church. The Synod’s funds will be released back to the Synod within the next two years after the project has been completed and revenue projections are being met. The new facility is expected to be ready for occupancy by this September for the beginning of the academic year.
